Preview – 2023 PIAA Team Dual State Championships AA

The 2023 PIAA Team Dual State Championships kick off Thursday in Hershey. But first, let’s introduce you to the teams that will be gunning for a state title this weekend. To find the brackets for this years state tournament visit my bracket hub.

(7-1) Burgettstown

Burgettstown is the District 7 champion, with a 31-24 win over Burrell in the finals. Burgettstown has had a great season, going undefeated up to this point. Their roster is loaded with great individual talent between the Sentipal brothers and other great talent sprinkled throughout. This team will look for a better finish this time after qualifying for the state tournament last year.

Honesdale is the District 2 champion defeating Lackawanna Trail 42-26 in the finals. Honesdale is a solid team that had a great run in the district tournament with a win over the 2 seed Berwick and defeating Lackawanna Trail, who they lost to in the regular season. This is not a roster with many state-level guys, but they come together well as a team with limited holes in the lineup.

United is the District 6 champion defeating Huntingdon 33-30 in the finals. United had a great season with an undefeated record coming into this weekend. Coming in as the 4 seed in the District 6 tournament, they defeated top-seeded Penns Valley and the 2-seeded Huntingdon on their way to a district title. This is an excellent lineup with some up-and-coming young guys. Jacob Sombronski is a familiar name in the lineup.

Saucon Valley is the District 11 runner-up after losing to Notre Dame-GP 49-15 in the finals. Saucon Valley won the 2022 PIAA Team Dual State Championship last year with an upset win over Notre Dame-GP. They have had a similar season this year, with some great wrestlers sprinkled into the lineup. They hope to repeat last year’s result.

Chestnut Ridge is the District 5 Champion after defeating Somerset 62-12 in the finals. Chestnut Ridge has been the king of District 5 wrestling, and that continues into this year. Despite a difficult out-of-district schedule, they only had 2 losses to teams that are in this tournament and 2 wins over teams in this tournament.

West Perry is the District 3 runner-up after losing to Berks Catholic 31-25 in the finals. West Perry had a great run in last year’s state tournament, making it all the way to the consolation round 3 after losing to Chestnut Ridge in the Quarterfinals. West Perry has a deep lineup that could cause havoc throughout the bracket as they look to improve on last year’s performance.

Berks Catholic is the District 3 Champion after defeating West Perry 31-25 in the finals. This is one of the best lineups in the state, with almost 0 holes in the lineup. This was a massive breakout year for this team after a disappointing end to last year’s dual season with 2 losses in the District 3 tournament. This year was about as impressive as you could get, with an undefeated record and blowing out the vast majority of their opponents.

Canton has repeated as a team state qualifier, with last year being knocked out in the pigtails to eventual state champion Saucon Valley. This team has had a great year overall, with multiple big wins on the year.

Brookville is the District 9 Champion after defeating Clearfield 33-26 in the finals. Another team that had a demanding schedule and came out pretty well. They went up against 4 teams that qualified for the AA tournament going 3-1 against them. There are some holes in the lineup, but there is still a good amount of talent in this lineup. They are on one of the most challenging sides of the bracket, so it will be interesting to see where this team goes.

Burrell is the District 7 runner-up after losing to Burgettstown 31-24 in the finals. Another team with a demanding schedule, as most schedules in the WPIAL are, Burrell came out looking pretty good. However, facing 6 teams that qualified for the state tournament, Burrell went 2-4 in those matchups.

Notre Dame-GP is the District 11 champion after defeating Saucon Valley 49-15 in the finals. Last year, this team placed 2nd at the team dual tournament falling to Saucon Valley in the state finals. This year they look to improve on that result and have had a great season. Their only loss was to Bethlehem Catholic in a tight 29-23 dual in December.

After missing the tournament last year, Reynolds is back. Reynolds has faced 5 schools in the AA /AAA state tournament and went 3-3.

Faith Christian also has one of the best lineups in the state, with most of the talent being Freshman and Sophomores.
